Essential Oils and COVID-19

The outbreak of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China, has impacted the world. This disease, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread quickly across 221 Countries in the world due to its highly contagious nature.

Transmission of COVID-19 occurs mainly through cough or sneeze droplets produced by an infected person. Respiratory droplets that include the virus can reach the mouth, nose or eyes of a susceptible person and can result in infection. Efforts to find a vaccine or drug to control the disease is occurring across the globe. In the meantime, complimentary therapies are also being explored to manage the disease.

Phytochemicals present in essential oils are known to possess a wide range of therapeutic activities. The antiviral efficacy of essential oil compounds is well documented. This study from 2020 screened essential oils against several pathogenic viruses with the oils of Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemongrass, Melissa, Tea Tree tested showing high levels of inhibition to the viruses.

In a study conducted in Lebanon,  seven essential oils were evaluated for their inhibitory activity post severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), the virus that causes COVID-19. The antiviral properties from the oils tested, revealed Bay, Cypress, Juniper, Sage to be the most effective in combating COVID-19.

The demonstrated potential of essential oils as antimicrobial agent has been studied extensively. A 2019 recent study summarised the latest research about the most active essential oils that are know and used for their antimicrobial properties. They found Cajeput, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint, Sage, Tea Tree, Thyme to be beneficial antimicrobial agents.

A study of Cajeput essential oil, which is well known for its antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic and antiviral activities properties demonstrated to be a strong valuable natural pharmaceutical source, that can inhibit the ACE2 protein ‐ the host receptor of PDB6LU7 protein in the SARS‐CoV‐2 as well as attack the PDB6LU7 protein at the same time.

Powerful Oregano essential oil with its high Carvacrol content has also been studied for use as a preventive or therapeutic adjuvant in COVID-19. It’s potent anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immuno-modulating properties help to reduce the harshness and progression of the disease. It targets oxidative stress, inflammation and immune system.

The low toxicity level of essential oils, as well as their natural origin make them a safe option regarding prevention of COVID19. Essential oils can also be supportive in the treatment the disease and in conjunction with medical care if you contract the disease.

At the start of the Pandemic I researched and created an essential oil blend for Adults and Kids to use as part of a prevention program for COVID-19. As the virus has progressed, I have updated and adjusted these blends in line with further current research as it becomes available.
