Diffusing is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience essential oils. As tiny aromatic molecules disperse into the air, they can transform the atmosphere of a room – creating a space that feels fresher, calmer, brighter or more grounded.
Whether you are beginning your day, resetting your workspace or winding down for the evening, your diffuser can become a simple ritual of intentional self-care.
1. Choose Your Diffuser
For everyday aromatherapy, an ultrasonic diffuser is a simple and effective choice.
These diffusers use water and ultrasonic vibration to create a fine aromatic mist that carries the essential oils into the surrounding air.
Before using your diffuser, always check the manufacturer’s instructions for:
- Maximum water capacity
- Recommended operating time
- Cleaning instructions
- Whether essential oils should be added directly to the water reservoir
Never overfill your diffuser.
2. Fill with Water
Fill the reservoir with clean water to the marked maximum fill line.
For the recipes in this collection, we use the following simple guide as a starting point:
Small diffuser – up to 100 mL
4 – 8 drops total essential oil
Medium diffuser – 100–200 mL
6 – 10 drops total essential oil
Large diffuser – 200–300 mL
8 – 12 drops total essential oil
These are general guidelines. Start with fewer drops and increase only if needed. More essential oil does not necessarily create a better aromatic experience.
3. Add Your Essential Oils
Once the water has been added, place your chosen essential oil or blend directly into the reservoir.
Add the total number of drops recommended for the size of your diffuser.
For example:
100 mL of water + 6 drops total essential oil
You might use:
- Lavender – 3 drops
- Frankincense – 2 drops
- Bergamot – 1 drop
Total: 6 drops
When using a pre-written diffuser blend, the number in brackets represents the number of drops to use.
For example:
Lavender (3) · Frankincense (2) · Bergamot (1)
This means:
3 drops Lavender + 2 drops Frankincense + 1 drop Bergamot = 6 drops total.
4. Start Low and Slow
Every room, diffuser and person is different.
Begin with the lowest recommended number of drops, particularly when:
- Using a small room
- Diffusing for the first time
- Using potent oils
- Diffusing around people who are sensitive to fragrance
- Diffusing in a home shared with others
The aroma should gently inhabit the space. It does not need to dominate it.
If you can smell the blend strongly the moment you enter the room, consider using fewer drops next time.
5. Diffuse Intermittently
Essential oils are best enjoyed with breaks between diffusion periods rather than continuously throughout the day.
As a general guide:
Diffuse for 30 – 60 minutes
Then switch the diffuser off for at least 30 – 60 minutes before diffusing again.
Ensure there is some fresh-air exchange in the room where possible.
Intermittent diffusion helps prevent the aroma from becoming overwhelming and gives your senses time to rest.
6. Create a Ritual Around the Time of Day
MORNING
Choose fresh, bright or energising aromas to help create a sense of awakening and clarity.
Try:
Lemon · Peppermint · Tangerine
DURING THE DAY
Choose clear, balanced aromas for your workspace or living area.
Try:
Sweet Orange · Frankincense · Lavender
EVENING
Choose softer, deeper aromas to signal the transition toward rest.
Try:
Lavender · Sandalwood · Roman Chamomile
Let scent become part of the rhythm of your day.
7. One Room at a Time
A diffuser is designed to scent the immediate environment – not your entire home.
For the best experience, diffuse in one room at a time and choose your number of drops according to the size of the diffuser and the space.
In smaller rooms, fewer drops are usually sufficient.
In larger, open-plan spaces, you may need a slightly stronger blend – but avoid simply adding large quantities of essential oil. Instead, consider diffusing for a little longer or using a second diffuser if appropriate.
8. Diffusing Around Others
Aroma is personal.
What feels beautifully calming to one person may feel overwhelming to another.
When diffusing in a shared space:
- Use a moderate amount of essential oil
- Keep the room well ventilated
- Allow people to move away from the aroma if they wish
- Avoid continuous diffusion
- Stop diffusing if anyone experiences discomfort
Use additional caution around babies, young children, people with asthma or respiratory sensitivities, and pets.
If you live with pets, particularly cats, ensure they are able to leave the room and are not confined in a space where essential oils are being diffused.
9. Listen to Your Body
Aromatherapy should feel pleasant.
If an aroma causes:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Coughing
- Eye or throat irritation
- Dizziness
- Any feeling of discomfort
Switch off the diffuser, move into fresh air and ventilate the room.
You may simply need fewer drops, a shorter diffusion period or a gentler blend.
10. Clean Your Diffuser
Essential oils leave aromatic residue behind.
To keep your diffuser functioning well and your blends smelling true:
- Empty any remaining water after use.
- Wipe the reservoir with a soft cloth.
- Clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Do not allow old water and essential oil residue to sit in the diffuser for extended periods.
A clean diffuser gives every blend a fresh beginning.
THE GOLDEN RULES OF DIFFUSING
Start with less.
You can always add another drop next time.
Diffuse intermittently.
Give both your senses and the room a break.
Allow fresh air.
Ventilation is part of safe and comfortable diffusion.
Respect the people and animals around you.
Everyone experiences aroma differently.
Follow your diffuser’s instructions.
Every diffuser has its own capacity and operating requirements.
When in doubt, use fewer drops.
A gentle aroma is often more effective – and more enjoyable – than an overpowering one.
