This essential oil’s most striking characteristic is its pale blue colour. It is derived from the Northern Territory Cypress and the first plantations were established on Melville Island in the early 1960s and across the Northern Territory in subsequent years. It requires long distillation times of up to 48 hours.

Traditional Indigenous practitioners inhale the vapours of the plant by either hand crushing them or placing them on hot stones. Similar processes were used to make healing poultices, to utilize the plant’s natural anti-inflammatory properties and moisturise dry skin in the desert. Oils were extracted through boiling the plant matter to create soothing body oil. The heart wood and bark was thrown into the fire and it acted as an insect repellant.
