The Complete Spring Allergy Guide

Breathe freely with botanical alchemy

There is a particular quality of light that arrives in September, one that pulls the body out of winter’s hush and back into motion. The air softens. The garden exhales. And somewhere in that same breath, the pollen rises too, coating the season we have waited for with the very thing that makes it hard to enjoy.

This is the quiet paradox of spring in Australia: the trigger and the remedy grow from the same soil. Botanical alchemy has always understood this. The plants that flood the air with pollen share their world with the plants that soothe the sinus, calm the inflamed tissue, and steady a nervous system on edge. Nature rarely asks us to look far for what balances her.

This guide is my full spring companion: the lifestyle foundations that lighten the allergic load, the ten oils I return to every year, four BlendCraft™ rituals built to meet the season head on, and the ready-made blends worth having close by. Let’s begin.

Lifestyle Foundations

The body’s resilience to spring is built in the small daily rituals, long before an oil ever meets the skin. Ten places to begin.

1. Guard against mould. Damp corners, old cupboards and unaired linen cupboards harbour spores that ride alongside pollen in the allergic load. Air every room the season permits.

2. If you live with a pet, wash the bedding weekly. Fur carries pollen indoors as faithfully as it carries love.

3. Move, daily, to support the lymph. Gentle movement, walking, stretching, rebounding, keeps the lymphatic system doing its quiet work of clearing what the season stirs up.

4. Sweat it out, then restore in an Epsom bath. A warm soak with Epsom salts draws tension from the muscles and supports the body’s own detoxification rhythm.

5. Begin the day alkalising. Warm water with fresh lemon, first thing, is a small ritual with a large effect on the body’s internal terrain.

6. Lean plant-based where you can. A diet rich in vegetables reduces the inflammatory load the immune system must otherwise manage.

7. Drink your greens. A fresh vegetable juice, taken most mornings, is a direct and gentle way to flood the body with what it needs to meet the season.

8. Fortify immunity deliberately. A quality probiotic, vitamin C, and sulphur-rich foods (garlic, onion, the brassicas) all support the body’s natural defences.

9. Notice what inflames. Coffee, sugar, alcohol and processed foods each add fuel to an already reactive system. Spring is a fair season to lighten them.

10. Trust the plants. Where lifestyle meets ritual, essential oils become the bridge, which is exactly where we turn next.

A body oil for the days the season presses in. Warm a small amount between the palms and apply to the chest, the temples, and the back of the neck, wherever the breath feels shallow or the head feels heavy.

Sinus Soother Inhalation

For one adult steam inhalation:

Cardamom 2 drops, Peppermint 1 drop, Lemon Myrtle 1 drop, Lavender 2 drops. Total: 6 drops

A morning ritual, before the day asks anything of you. Add the blend toa pproximately 500 mL of freshly boiled water in a large, heatproof bowl with a capacity of at least 1 litre. This gives adequate headroom and helps reduce the risk of splashing while leaning over the bowl. Breathe gently and slowly for two or five minutes taking breaks if needed, and discontinue immediately if the vapour feels irritating or uncomfortable. Steam inhalation should be approached cautiously by people with asthma or respiratory sensitivity. Let it be the first clear breath of the day.

Pollen Buster Diffuser Blend

Ravensara 3 drops · Lavender 2 drops · Tea Tree 2 drops · Frankincense 1 drop.

An evening ritual for refreshing the atmosphere and clearing the room of the pollen carried in hair, clothe and skin and settling the nervous system towards rest as the day winds down. Add the blend to a 100ml ultrasonic diffuser and allow its fresh, clearing aroma to move gently through the room, helping create a sense of ease as you transition toward rest.

Diffuse in a well-ventilated room for 30–60 minutes, then switch off and allow the room to air before diffusing again. Avoid continuous diffusion for extended periods.

Always follow your diffuser manufacturer’s water-capacity and operating instructions. Use with consideration around children, people with asthma or fragrance sensitivities, and pets—particularly cats—and ensure they can leave the room if desired.

Personal Inhaler Blend

Your pocket ally for pollen season.

Ravensara 6 drops · Eucalyptus 5 drops · Peppermint 4 drops

Makes 1 personal inhaler – Your pocket ally for pollen season.

Add the essential oils directly onto the absorbent cotton wick, then place the wick inside the inhaler and secure the base firmly. Replace the cap whenever the inhaler is not in use to help preserve the aroma.

When needed, remove the cap and hold the inhaler just beneath the nostrils. Take 1–2 slow, gentle breaths, then replace the cap. Allow a moment before repeating rather than taking repeated deep inhalations.

Carry it with you through the day – on the train, at the desk, or mid-walk when the air feels heavy and you need a moment of aromatic clarity.

For personal inhalation only. Avoid contact with the eyes and do not allow children to use the inhaler without appropriate professional guidance. Discontinue use if the aroma causes irritation, coughing or discomfort. People with asthma or other respiratory sensitivities should seek appropriate medical advice before use.

For Her: Ready-Made Wellbeing

Allergy season does not arrive alone. It often brings the sinus-pressure headache, the tension that gathers behind the eyes and across the temples. This is where our Women’s Wellbeing range meets the moment.

Headease Blend

Formulated for the sinus-pressure and tension headaches that so often shadow the pollen count, Headease in a roller of diffuser I recommend most in September and October. Keep it close through the season.
